The Parkland School Division currently has a TEMPORARY FULL TIME (1.0 FTE) position available at The Centre for Education in Stony Plain, AB. Temporary Positions are not eligible for benefits of leave entitlements.

Function and Purpose of Position

Under the general supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor, the Summer Student is responsible for performing tasks including installing, troubleshooting, repairing and general building, property and equipment maintenance. Medium to heavy physical demands with lifting is an essential part of the position as various skilled duties are performed. Working with tradespersons is required and essential to our team environment approach

Service Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine inspections of premises and equipment including playground equipment, building exterior, interior and landscape/parking lot
  • Perform preventative maintenance on a variety of building systems
  • Ability to diagnose problems, replace or repair parts on a variety of building systems and adjust if necessary (e.g. ventilation)
  • Complete basic repairs and maintenance on building components and equipment
  • Complete emergency/unscheduled repairs of equipment, structures and grounds on the property
  • Manage an inventory of equipment, tools and machinery as assigned
  • Ability to complete assigned work orders in a timely and efficient manner
  • Ability to plan and prioritize work for self and seek help when needed
  • Move large quantities of furniture and equipment as assigned
  • Install appliances and equipment
  • Seasonal duties as assigned such as garden/yard maintenance, snow removal, etc.…
  • Ability to go on call as per IUOE collective agreement
  • Check functionality of safety systems and be able to complete basic functions on said systems (e.g. fire alarm, security, etc.…)
  • Collaborate and take the lead (when required) with co-workers and other professionals during renovations.

Occupational Health and Safety & Safe Work Practices

  • Knowledgeable in PSDs safety procedures and training to carry out the assigned duties safely
  • Report any near misses or accidents immediately to the Maintenance Supervisor
  • Able to identify any hazards involved in the assigned task, detail the controls that must be put in place and articulates the specific practices to be followed to minimize the possibility of accidents and injury
  • Perform regular inspection of playground equipment, building exterior, interior and landscape/parking lot
  • Monitoring the physical condition of equipment, tools and machinery and taking necessary precautions to correct as needed
  • Comply with Occupation Health and Safety standards and practices

  • Interactions with management, colleagues, students and the public in a school setting

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Task specific PPE is required
  • Clothing must be appropriate for assigned task i.e. no torn or ragged clothing
  • Other additional PPE may include footwear, gloves, etc

Knowledge and Skills

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record
  • Physically able to climb, crawl, crouch and lift up to 50 lbs
  • Can work on ladders, or in tight spaces
  • Skilled in the use of hand and power tools
  • Ability to take apart machines, equipment or devices to remove and replace defective parts
  • Ability to check blueprints, repair manuals or parts catalogs as necessary
  • Ability to use common tools such as hammers, hoists, saws, drills and wrenches
  • Ability to use of a variety of hand and power tools, electric meters and material handling equipment relating to maintenance duties
  • Experience with precision measuring instruments or electronic testing devices
  • Experience performing routine maintenance
  • Strong organizational and follow-up skills

  • Basic understanding of construction safe work practices and procedures

  • Certificates/Training that would be an asset:
  • Playground Inspector certification
  • Skid Steer operator
  • Man Lift training
  • Fall protection

Physical Demands

  • The Summer Student will be required to routinely lift items weighting up to 50 lbs. Sometimes, heavier lifting may be required.
  • Ability to climb stairs/ladders frequently to varying heights
  • Ability to perform heavy physical work; regularly
  • Ability to lift and move materials and equipment weighing up to 90 lbs and heavier weights with the use of proper equipment
  • Repetitive and strenuous work

The Summer Student must agree to respect the confidentiality and personal integrity of students, parents, teachers and other staff.

Hours of Work: 40 hours /week

Pay Rate: $22.33 per hour

This position requires an original copy of a current clean criminal record check without vulnerable sector and an original copy of a child intervention record check.

This position is covered by the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local No. 955 Collective Agreement.
